John Edwards

I have always had an interest in the creative arts. During my working career I made a series of educational films and videos that won both national and international prizes. Although I sketched and painted throughout my childhood, it was not until adulthood that I developed my skills more formally through various educational courses, and informally through interacting with other artists. When I moved to Southampton I successfully completed a part-time extramural course on Art & Design at Winchester School of Art, which further extended my knowledge and understanding.

I have attended various other courses over the years, to mix with other artists and to develop my artistic abilities. My early work was initially focused primarily on figurative art. However, in recent years I have moved away from figurative art towards experimenting with more abstract forms and shapes. I am currently trying to apply these ideas to my two main passions, which are mountains and landscapes. In my younger, more agile, days I was a very keen rock-climber, and much of my painting reflects this enthusiasm.

I have exhibited at various locations over the years, both solo and group exhibitions, including Hampshire Open Studios.

I have only recently joined the New Road Artists and am enjoying learning from the group, as I find abstract painting to be generally more challenging than figurative work.
