Ann Dawson

I grew up in the Lake District and the landscape of the north remains a constant theme in my work. I studied at Liverpool College of Art and went on to teach art and design in London.

In 1994 I moved to Winchester and finally had the time to paint and develop my work alongside other painters at the Tower Arts Centre in Winchester, Chapel House Studios in Cornwall and with John Skinner in Dorset.

Most of my current work is a response to the landscape where I live and walk every day. Abstract pieces attempt to capture the essential characteristics of a place – the shapes and patterns of fields and tracks near my home. More realistic pieces, sometimes based on coastlines as well as the Hampshire countryside, offer the challenge of trying to capture the play of the elements; rain, wind and the ever changing light. I paint in oil and mixed media on canvas, wood panels and Khadi handmade paper.

A love of colour, surface textures and marks, as well as the sensuous qualities of the paint itself all aspire, I hope, to give life to my paintings. I have been exhibiting and selling my work since 1998.
